The Realm of Possibility
What exactly is “in” the Realm of Possibility? Who determines what resides in this zone?
Possibility. A word that incites so much hope and inspiration. When we are young it seems that nothing is impossible. “You can be anything you want to” is the default answer given to any youth that aspires to be president or an astronaut. Anything and everything is within the Realm of possibility for a child. So what exactly changes between adulthood and childhood to shrink your Realm of Possibility? As a child we begin to learn about the world. Its beauty and its underbelly. Its possibilities and also, its limitations. By and large our expectations are set for us. By the very people we learn from. Our teachers and parents and the collective “village” that helps to raise a child. The most basic of parental instincts it to protect their young and as such guidance toward the safest course of action is most frequently prescribed. But this ultimately serves as a disservice to the student being taught. By establishing as fact the limitations of the world we set in them a course that is risk averse causing them to live a life of mediocrity.
Think about it. It is the people that have no fear of failure or the big “what if” that are able to chart a course to alter the world. Most of us seem content to allow our Realm of Possibility to be greatly limited by all of the stories of the failures of those who tried to “do the impossible”. But is it wise to base what you can be on what people around you aren’t? The only person who should set your limitations is YOU.
It has been said that “The people who change the world are those that are crazy enough to believe that they can”. It is also a fact that people who do the impossible are those that don’t know that what they are doing is “impossible”. I believe that the the best way to increase your Realm of Possibility is to seek after, the impossible. By making a concerted effort to achieve the impossible you will enlarge your Realm of Possibility. It is so easy to listen to naysayers and worry warts nestled warmly inside their comfort zones tell you what can and can’t be done. It never ceases to amaze me the number of people that are experts on subjects they have never encountered. And in most cases it’s not because they wish to kill your dreams (not that these people don’t exist in large number) it’s that they simply cannot believe in something they have not seen before or don’t believe they could achieve themselves. Every record is unbreakable until it is broken. Instead, take stock of what skills you possess and the passions of your heart and chart a course to increase your “Realm of Possibility” until it engulfs the entire Earth, and maybe even beyond.
